Why Prioritizing Our Mental Health is Important?

It’s high time we realize that deteriorating Mental Health is our worst nightmare! There is a fine line between natural death and death by suicide. The pain and agony that pushes a person to end his or her life can be the worst feeling a human can bear! Globally, around 8 lakh people die by suicide every year.
According to WHO, suicide is considered the fourth most important reason behind deaths across the world among the young generation. And around 77% of suicide deaths occur in lower or middle-class families.
This data is only increasing with time! The question here is, Why? Why do people end their own lives, when the common human tendency is to love themselves? That’s a thought deeper than the sea!
Ending one’s life is not easy but taking the path of suicide seems easier to those who suffer from deteriorating mental health conditions every possible second of their lives. And that is why prioritizing mental health is important!
The Stigma around Mental Health
In our society, talking about mental health is still considered taboo. Very few people who are aware of the fact that mental health is as important as physical health is doing their bit to prioritize it and the rest are only falling for the trap every day!
While some people are brave enough to fight the issues related to their mental health, the ones who cannot cope with it become suicidal at some point.
People must understand that “mental health disorders” do not always mean that a person has to be mentally disabled. Rather it means that people are on the verge of becoming so emotionally unstable that at one point they can take the step to end their lives!
We need to educate ourselves more about mental health disorders and help our near ones cope with emotional losses in a mindful way so that they can come out of it with ease rather than suffering day by day!
How to help people suffering from deteriorating mental health conditions?
In everyday lives, we come across people who are suffering emotionally at some level. Some have monetary issues while others have relationship problems.
In today’s time with such busy schedules, we have forgotten to sit with each other and have heart-to-heart conversations, people today neither have the time nor the patience to listen to the agonizing stories.
They move on too rapidly which makes them lonely at some point! When conversations are done right, the pain that you bear might not end but the suffering surely dies down to a maximized extent!
Be a Listener!
The easiest way to help them is to LISTEN to them! Yes, half the problems can be solved when you listen to a person suffering from a bad mental health condition. You must be mindful enough to understand that if someone is sharing their thoughts with you, then you should not use the information against them or taunt them regarding their misfortune. You must lend your ears and heart to a person who is already going through a lot, emotionally! If you cannot offer any help, at least do not bring them more trauma by criticizing them or being emotionally unavailable. Hug them tight and tell them you are there for them in their bad times!
Be Kind!
And the most important thing you can do to help them beyond listening is to be KIND! Yes, kindness is a language that is seldom spoken these days! With kindness, you not only make people around you comfortable but help them deal with mental agony in a much better way! Speak politely, listen to them and be kind; half their battle against mental health issues will already be won!
Seek Help!
If you are the one who is suffering from anxiety, depression, stress, or any other mental health problems, the best way to get out of it is to seek professional help if there is no other way out! The hesitation of you meeting a psychiatrist or a psychological counselor must start to fade away so that you get the desired help from the professionals! Never hesitate to seek help when you face issues with your mental health for it can grow vigorously and you can get trapped in it without even realizing it!
Final Thoughts
In our everyday lives, we do stuff to improve our physical well-being. Be it wearing good clothes to look appealing or eating right to maintain our health, we are always doing our bit for prioritizing our external appearance or our physical health. But in the midst of all these, we fail to acknowledge that our mental health might be suffering bit by bit.
The pressure of fulfilling responsibilities, the trauma of losing loved ones, or even a deteriorating physical health might affect our minds in a way that we slip into depression or face anxiety very frequently.
We need to focus more on being mentally fit and prioritize it as much as we prioritize our physical health. We must indulge in things that make us happy and cut off from the negativity and toxicity that surrounds us. Seek help, talk to your loved ones and focus on positivity, life will be easier and better each day!
